Georgia football fans can’t contain enthusiasm for 2019 season

ATHENS — Georgia coach Kirby Smart wanted to know his fans names, their hometowns, who their favorite UGA player was and …. how they were doing.

The normally buttoned down, serious and rushed Bulldogs head coach lowered his guarded personality for Fan Day on Saturday.

The flood in Bainbridge, Ga., of 1994? Yep, Smart remembered that.

It was his freshman year a UGA, and he had to go back home from school to pack up some things, as he told the story.

It was a typical exchange for Smart.

After all, in addition to his coaching pedigree, Smart enjoys the spoils of being a home-state hero and former Bulldogs’ player.

To some he’s “Coach Smart,” but to most, he’s just “Kirby” and that sits fine with him.

As big-time as Georgia football has gotten, and as limited and restricted as the one-hour Fan Day seemed, Kirby and his players did their best to make it a memorable and personable experience.

No doubt, Bulldogs players don’t often break their coach’s rules, but on Saturday they did.

Jake Fromm might have been the biggest transgressor.

Fromm smiled widely and sincerely for the fans wanting to crowd into a selfie with him. The day before, at Media Day, Fromm vowed to “slow things down” and make the most of this season.

Fan Day was a calculated and budgeted break in the action.

Fact is, the Bulldogs’ preseason time is quickly running out.

There is no margin for error if Georgia is to win the national championship that has so narrowly eluded them the past two seasons.

DawgNation talked to fans as they left the Georgia Fan Day on Saturday and received plenty of feedback on potential break-out players, stumbling blocks and favorite Bulldogs.
